KiloWorks E-mail Settings...

For the people that have an email account on the kiloworks.com server, please adhere to the following settings while setting up the email account in your email client (e.g. Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc). The standard settings will still work, but it is highly recommended that you use the secure settings as below.

  • SPOP3
    • Server: secure431.hostgator.com
    • Port: 995
    • SSL: yes
    • Username: yourname@kiloworks.com
    • Password: yourpassword
  • SSMTP
    • Server: secure431.hostgator.com
    • Port: 465
    • SSL: yes
    • Username: yourname@kiloworks.com
    • Password: yourpassword
  • Outlook 2003 Instructions
    • from the Outlook 2003 menu, select “Tools|Email Accounts…|View or change existing email accounts…”
    • click “Next”
    • select the KiloWorks email account and click “Change”
    • ensure both server names are as above
    • click “More Settings…”
    • go to the “Advanced” tab
    • first check both “This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)” boxes
    • then change the SMTP port number as above
    • repeat for any/all KiloWorks email account(s)
  • FAQ
    • Why “secure431.hostgator.com” instead of “mail.kiloworks.com”?
      • This is optional, but because with SSL, your Outlook or your email program of choice will complain of an invalid SSL certificate since the certificate is not for mail.kiloworks.com, but for secure431.hostgator.com, on which our email server simply resides. The unfortunate side-effect is that if our hosting provider moves our servers (as it just did recently), everyone will have to update their email settings accordingly.
    • Why SSL?
      • Because your passwords and email are now more secured while in transmission than compared to previously.
    • Has anything else changed, like webmail, passwords, etc?
      • No.
  • Fallback
    • Should you have any issues with the secure settings as above, you may fallback to the standard settings as below:
      • POP3
        • Server: mail.kiloworks.com
        • Port: 110
        • SSL: no
        • Username: yourname@kiloworks.com
        • Password: yourpassword
      • SMTP
        • Server: mail.kiloworks.com
        • Port: 26
        • SSL: no
        • Username: yourname@kiloworks.com
        • Password: yourpassword

As usual, you may still access the webmail interface via the following URL: https://webmail.kiloworks.com

Firefox and Gallery Movie Clips...

If you are using the Firefox browser, you may discover that you are unable to play certain video files from the gallery, even though you may have already installed the Windows Media Player plug-in (Windows-only link).

To correct this issue, you will have to edit a file as described here.

Basically, you will have to:

  1. install the plug-in
  2. edit the file "pluginreg.dat" found in the "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox" directory (separate user accounts on Windows require separate updates to this file)
  3. to edit this file, press the Windows key + R (to bring up the "Run" dialoge box)
  4. enter the following (or copy and paste the following) into the entry field:
    • wordpad "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\pluginreg.dat"
  5. search for the text "Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library|$"
  6. edit the line directly below that from "9" to "10" (without the double-quotes)
  7. insert the line after the 8th ("8|video/x-ms-wvx|Media Files|wvx,*|$") entry with:
    • 9|video/x-msvideo|Media Files|avi,*|$
  8. save the file
  9. restart Firefox
